The Mayor’s Cup, a test of softball skills between the city’s firefighters and police officers, returns to Sand Springs May 18.
The best-of-three softball tournament is more than fun and games, though.
Money and food donated by spectators and gathered by the sparring teams will go to aid Sand Springs Community Services, said SSCS director Lisa Romine.
This year, the games are set for an evening start, at 6:30 p.m. The games will be played at River City Park’s softball field.
Admission is $5 at the gate, or $5 worth of non-perishable food, household goods, or school supplies, said Gene Harrison, with the Sand Springs Parks Department.
“The winner gets the Mayor’s Cup,” harrison said. “Whoever wins gets to carry it back to the department.”
The last two years, the winner has been the Fire Department, something the police hope to turn around this year.
Whoever wins the game, said Jamie Harrison, recreation coordinator for the Parks Department, Sand Springs Community Services will be the big winner.
Gene Harrison echoed her sentiments.
“Their sole purpose is to help the people of Sand Springs,” he added.
Community Services is a non-profit agency that gives aid to Sandites who are either economically disadvantaged, or going through a hard time.
The agency helps with such matters as providing food and clothing, as well as giving some help with utility bills.
The agency also gives away school supplies to qualified children each year.
Gene Harrison said he hopes to draw large crowds to the game, to help raise more money for SSCS. He is encouraging major companies in town to donate, and has an offer for registered softball teams in his league.
“The team with the most donations will get a pizza party at Mazzio’s at the end of the season,” Harrison said.
